On April 30, 2026, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Louisiana v. Callais to strike down a Louisiana congressional map featuring two majority-Black districts. This vote significantly affects Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. This decision also restricts the use of race in redistricting, favoring traditional districting principles over race-conscious remedies and will absolutely have a trickle down effect statewide.
SEC. 2. No voting qualification or prerequisite to voting, or standard, practice, or procedure shall be imposed or applied by any State or political subdivision to deny or abridge the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color. - Voting Rights Act
While I have a zillion thoughts on this particular Supreme Court — six in particular — I think these eight women (an actual “Black Lady Courtroom” for those who enjoyed four seasons of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” — and did the clap) who work in the legal industry can offer more insider knowledge.
Tune in to watch Rep. Jasmine Crockett (a public defender, civil rights attorney, State Representative and the most obviously qualified candidate for a Texas Senator) talk to these attorneys:
For your convenience, I’ve also linked each speaker because I knew very little about seven of eight of them, and it was really intriguing to hear their views. Enjoy!
