ABOUT ONE BLACK WOMAN’S VOTE:
How did this publication “One Black Woman’s Vote” come about?
I’ve been an Election Judge twice (the third time I withdrew my name because of the COVID-19 outbreak) and a Key Judge. I’ve worked for two traditional print newspapers, completed contract work with one mainstream broadcasting station, and worked here and there with a few online news platforms that came and went. I’ve always been into politics, including following political canvassers around to see how their job is done.
So it rattles my cage a little when someone says, “Our vote doesn’t matter” or “They don’t do nothing for black people.” It wears on my patience when people who don’t vote complain about politics. It’s always someone who never votes in local elections, doesn’t have a clue who their mayor or governor is, and wants the president to be their Fairy Godfather or Aladdin’s (less creepy-looking version of Will Smith) Genie.
I can’t force people to vote in any election. But what I can do is highlight why I will continue to vote in every election since I was, as my mother nicknamed me, “Ms. Malcolm X” on a college campus. Being quiet about inequality does not happen with me.

I have very strong opinions on politics and activism. Majority of the time, I “bleed blue.” That still hasn’t stopped me from voting for a Republican before and being a Republican Election Judge. (It was my only option to participate in Chicago’s left-leaning city.) It hasn’t stopped me from voting Independent. And it hasn’t stopped me from voting Green Party. Do I vote Democrat/Liberal most of the time? About as much as I eat vegetarian food! In other words, 99% of the time.
I vote for the person who I think aligns with the issues I care about the most. And I really think after all those jelly bean counts, Civil Rights fights, and the 15th and 19th amendments, the very least all my skinfolk can do is stand in a line for a day to vote.
