Now hiring (but not black women)
Conservative group attacking black women for investing in black-women-owned businesses adds another level of job-seeking stress

I love dogs. Sixty seconds into reading “Black Girl In a Doggone World” or looking at the 98 dogs I’ve walked makes that clear. I’m at the point where when neighbors see me alone, they squint and ask, “Where’s your dog?” as if I never leave the house without her. (If it wasn’t for super hater curbside pickup people, I probably would never leave without her.)

As an Amazon affiliate, I earn a percentage from purchases with my referral links. I know some consumers are choosing to boycott Amazon for its DEI removal. However, after thinking about this thoroughly, I choose to continue promoting intriguing products from small businesses, women-owned businesses and (specifically) Black-owned businesses who still feature their items on Amazon. All five of my Substack publications now include a MINIMUM of one product sold by a Black-owned business. (I have visited the seller’s official site, not just the Amazon Black-owned logo, to verify this.) If you still choose to boycott, I 100% respect that decision.
So when I saw a recent job to help a marketing company that solely focuses on pet products, I couldn’t apply for the remote position fast enough. Although I’ve completed a few copywriting projects here and there, anything involving legal rights and pets will catch my attention 99% quicker than other industries. I saw seven open positions on their “Careers” page but only applied for the one I knew I’d enjoy most. I recorded the required video to talk about my love for dogs and set up a calendar appointment for an interview.
And within 24 hours, I got this response:
Thank you for taking the time to apply for the Remote role at [company redacted]. We’re truly inspired by the talented people who find their way to us and we're grateful that you included us in your search.
Unfortunately, we are currently not hiring at this time for this role.
We will be canceling our interview.
However, [company redacted] is growing quickly, so we encourage you to keep an eye on our Career page for new opportunities.
I looked at the reply in confusion, specifically the last line (highlighted in bold by me). I did look at their “Careers” page before I applied. Still, I sent a “thank you” reply and asked them were they aware that this position was one of the featured seven. No response. A message to the founder was greeted by silence too.
