Trevor Noah thanks black women, I thank him
The first late-night talk show host who I was proud of for speaking on women's issues
I have had this image on my website for six years. I read and highlighted this quote from his book “Born a Crime,” and then found an image I liked to put it on. I have read his autobiography twice and will probably read it a third time. I am a fan of his—obviously.
When Trevor Noah confirmed he was quitting “The Daily Show,” I cried as quickly as I did when I learned Chadwick Boseman died. Clearly, Trevor Noah was alive and kicking. But both he and Chadwick Boseman had a way of talking about black women that just connected with me on a deeper level than other late-night talk show hosts or a sizable amount of black men who I meet on a daily basis (my family excluded—cause majority of them “get” us). (If a man loves and respects his mother, he moves differently. If you know, you know.)
On last night’s show when Trevor Noah thanked black women, I wasn’t even slightly surprised. I did shed a few more tears though.
“I’ve often been credited with having these grand ideas,” he said. “People are like, ‘Oh, Trevor, you’re so smart.’ Who do you think teaches me? Y’know. Who do you think has shaped me, nourished me, informed me? From my mom, my nan, my aunt all these black women in my life — and in America as well.”

“I always tell people if you truly want to learn about America, talk to black women,” he continued. “Cause, unlike everybody else, black women can’t afford to fuck around and find out. Black people understand how hard it is when things go bad, especially in America. But any place where black people exist, whether it’s Brazil, whether it’s South Africa, wherever it is. When things go bad, black people know that it gets worse for them.”

I’ve said everything I had to say about how much I’ll miss Trevor Noah on his late-night show. Although he was loved on the show, I still thought his wit, comedic timing, and introspective look at American politics and history from an immigrant’s perspective were underrated. His entire existence and experiences will always outrank the perspective of all former late-night shows, with Arsenio Hall being the only one who comes close.

There are only a handful of actors and comedians who I follow every single project on IMDB and their independent work. Trevor Noah is one of them. So while he’s thanking black women, this black woman is thanking him right back. I look forward to your next journey.
